A scarf for a new Denver friend who has made my transition here easier. She and her husband are truly lovely people — friends I hope to have forever:

I picked this yarn up in Tempe because it reminded me of the ocean. Thankfully, I bought two skeins, which worked out perfectly. There was enough for the long fringe, and to wrap the gift and attach washing instructions.
Fellow knitters — call me crazy, but I’m putting a new rule on this craft. I am no longer letting myself “buy a skein because it so pretty!” I have so many odd ball gorgeous single skeins of yarn, and few projects I actually want to knit with 1 ball. No more. I’m going to work through my current stash and then be disciplined to buy what a project calls for.
Does anyone stick to this? Or have a better plan?

i’m with you on this one – buying because something is pretty is so much fun, but i have a stash FULL of yarn that i’ve never known what to do with!
now i’m knitting hats, one skein at a time, and not buying new yarn unless i know what i’m going to do with it!
You are right about the yarn…I’m stuck with small amounts of pretty yarn. I’ve decided that before I buy any more yarn, I have have to use up my odd bits of yarn. I’ve been searching Ravelry for patterns to use and have found some nice cowls, fingerless mitts, cuffs & hats. I started one called the “Tuesday Cowl” this week. Good luck!

I have the same problem! I am refusing to buy any new yarn until I significantly reduce what I already have (including giving it away if I have to!)
That is really pretty! The colors are great. And yes, sometimes I buy things just because they are pretty, including yarn that I know I probably won’t really use.

Wonderful rule for your yarn stash. The only exception I’d make is a nice skein of fingering since it can usually make a shawl or a pair of socks. I do have odd skeins of cashmerino to combine in hats – maybe I can figure out how to use my “odd balls” that way, too.
Someday when we can meet up again, I not only want to chat with you about the wearying practice of writing fiction, but ask for advice on knitting! Sadly, I’ve never been able to master it, and when I tried again a few months ago, I found I had forgotten everything I ever had been taught. Where did that knowledge go?????
I have the same goal! Too many single (and multiple) skeins of yarn taking up cabinet space in my home office. Let’s get together and knit!
