Kitchen Fetish
Ikea, Martha Stewart, Target. Thoughtful gifts from friends, feeding my cooking frenzy.
If I have a kitchen fetish, it’s bowls. I have so many bowls in different shapes and sizes. I love to buy the oddly shaped, fire-glazed ceramic bowls at the local art fairs. I bought three giant bowls from a potter when I was in the Philippines and use them regularly. I also love to buy interesting bowls at thrift shops and fill them with goodies to give. I don’t believe your dishes need to be match-matchy, obviously.
{Also, one of the only possessions my grandmother brought when she immigrated to the US was an old yellow ceramic bowl/crock. I’ve had my eye on that sucker for years. It’s now in my mama’s kitchen and she regularly reminds me I’ll have to pry it from her after death. That’s fine. Cody can have the Hummels. I want the bowl.}
Imagine my delight last night when I came home to find a giant FedEx box on my doorstep. Inside contained a new red bowl, cookie scoop, cookie sheet and container full of homemade Cowboy Cookies. I kid you not.
This week has been nutty, at best. Yesterday was one of those days so laughably horrific that I thought the writers from “How I Met Your Mother” were going to pop out and Barney would say, “Wow, with the awesomeness.” As I was considering brownies or wine for dinner, instead I came home to find homemade cookies on my doorstep (and decided to have all three!) It was like the universe was giving me a much needed hug and I took it with full force and giant glass of milk. So, thank you Kathryn. You have no idea how much I needed chocolate and a kind deed. You, simply put, are awesome.
I wasn’t kidding about the brownies. They were gobbled up at the gym, bagel shop and now the office this morning. My little home smells like dark chocolate and cardamom heaven.
Wishing you lots of sweets awesomeness this Halloween,
Kelli

Love thast you love all kinds of bowls. I am that way with glasses and many other table and kirchen related things. I do not like to always match either. It’s fun to accessorize your table creatively as you do your wardrobe to make a statement about who you are. What a wonderful gift from your friend Kathryn. One you can enjoy over and over again using in your kitchen (and a bowl!) and one you can have fun in your kitchen baking and then eating. Very thoughtful gift and yummy too. Laughing about Barney — that character cracks me up.

October 31st, 2008 at 3:27 pmWhat a sweet gift! And I love your bowls! The only thing that keeps me from buying more every time I go to TJ Maxx/Kohls/Williams-Sonoma/etc is trying to find storage space for them. How do you store all of yours?
October 31st, 2008 at 4:14 pmOh Kelli! I always knew there was some cosmic reason why I connected with you and now I know: “the BOWL thing”!! I just can not pass up a great bowl. My former husband once told a friend on the phone “No, Nancy’s not home. I don’t know where she is but I’m pretty sure she’ll come home with more bowls”. It was one of the few things about me that he DID understand!
November 1st, 2008 at 12:13 pmWow, what a great surprise that was waiting for you. I love it when others give me cooked items as gifts. Love it.
I’m glad to see I’m not the only one with a love for kitchen items. I’ve always liked the ceramic bowls too.
Sis, a friend of my mom and dads..never knew her real name, but everyone in the neighborhood called her Sis. Not sure how it started. lol. Anyways, she was like a second mother to all of us kids.
She passed along to me some of her family monigramed kitchen ware like a glass water picture. Some crystal goblets. Needless to say, these are in my cabinet. As well as a pottery bowl that has to be up in years. I cherish these greatly and miss her and her husband Clyde just as much. They were always great to me when I was a kid.
November 2nd, 2008 at 2:17 pmI love bowls too. So many bowls- too little storage! we have a much loved set of multi-colored pyrex that belonged to my dh’s grandma. Love using those.

November 3rd, 2008 at 12:26 amI had to stop in and tell you I’ve got a bit of a bowl fetish too. I love tiny bowls and huge bowls. So hard to let go of them sometimes but they’re taking over. I hope you get your granny’s bowl some day! I received my Grandma’s long coveted dishes as a wedding gift. What a treasure.
