Nicaragua: The View
The cathedral in Jinotega.
One of many statues inside the churches we visited. These buildings are remnants of Spanish colonization and are silent sanctuaries in the otherwise noisy cities across the country.
The cathedral from the view of the wildly colorful cemetery.
A typical Nicaraguan rural kitchen. The wood burning stove reminds me that nothing is easy or simple for Nicaraguan women.
Amazing how orderly and clean this kitchen is considering the animals roaming just outside and the dirt floor. And yet, everything had its place.
Sewing in rural Nicaragua.
Laundry in rural Nicaragua.
A farming cooperative in rural Nic that is supported in part by USAID.
Cabbage, anyone?
The national cathedral in Managua — this was destroyed in an earthquake in the 1970s and now serves as a totally inappropriate place for President Ortega’s advertising.
Man begging outside of the central cathedral in Granada. (Yes, I did feel like I was on a church tour, but really — they are the most impressive buildings in each city. Thank you, conquistadores.)
Air conditioning in church. I’m thinking the heat of hell is a pretty appropriate theme.
Scene from the central square in Granada.
Nothing says humid fun like a carriage ride, right? Or — you could just sit on the steps, sip a cool Coke from an icy bottle and take photos of the suckers who agree to such rides.

June 8th, 2008 at 10:51 pmLove the central square photo and the colors in the cemetery pic! And, geez I’m now more grateful for my kitchen!
June 9th, 2008 at 7:13 amI wish I didn’t get heat stroke so easily. I’d love to do something like this.
June 9th, 2008 at 7:49 amThank you for opening my eyes to how others live. I am humbled. Those things I think I need (hello, icemaker, water dispenser, dishwasher, etc), are really enormous luxuries and I am so so lucky to have them.
ps. the people-watching is one of my favorite parts of travelling.

June 14th, 2008 at 1:20 pmThank you Kelli for posting the pictures of Nicaragua. I have been there twice. The last time, I worked for a month - 2 weeks on a build project in Managua and 2 week working with quilters in Puerto Cabezas on the east coast. I also worked with children in an orphanage there 0 teaching them basic stitching. What amazing people they are. What a beautiful country in so many places, ie. Selva Negra near Matagalpa. I would love to return to my friends there but I suffered from the intense heat and humidity. I send bales of fabric to the women of Puerto Cabezas. They sew things and sell them in the market. They send me some things to sell for them, here in Canada.
