Random Act of Awesomeness
Yep, awesomeness. (I’m stealing this from Barney.) Look what was waiting for me yesterday when I came home from work? Wrapped sweetly in a giant Zappos box with no return address or gift card — this anonymous gift is nothing short of thoughtful and awesome. Thank you kind friend!
On a different note, yesterday I visited a rock gym for the first time. It was a touch unsettling to see how high the walls were, and how unflattering the harnesses are, but when in Rome.
I think I’m going to get the hang of this sport and make it a regular thing. I really enjoyed the mental and physical challenge. Plus, there are few activities like this where you can so objectively notice progress. The routes are all marked by difficulty. Watching the experienced climbers perilously pull themselves up and cheer when they mastered a new route was motivating. And really? Don’t I need a new hobby?
~K
P.S. You know I wore the birdie bag to the rock gym! I may have been sausaged into a harness, but I had the cutest accessories.

Love the bag OH so much and even more since it was the result of a random act of kindness. And no one deserves it more than you. I’m sure you will get a lot of good use out of it. And, to the sweet person who sent it to Kelli - bless you, that was a really kick ass thing to do!
I can’t wait for you to come out to CA so we can climb outdoors. It is so addictive and it looks like you took to it right away. We’ll have you up on 5.12’s in no time.
January 9th, 2007 at 9:36 amWhoo hooo! That is so awesome that someone sent you that bag! You do deserve it.
I agree with FinnyKnits, kick as act of kindness.
Yay! new active hobby!
January 9th, 2007 at 10:56 amAwesome, indeed! How kind, and oh so cute. Congrats on your new hobby
January 9th, 2007 at 11:04 amAwesome indeed.
We used to hit the rock wall once a week. And we used to climb outdoors in the summer. But then we stopped. And kayaking became the activity of choice.
January 9th, 2007 at 11:15 amWow! I know lots of people love you, but someone REALLY loves you! Rock on, chiqua!
January 9th, 2007 at 11:22 amMy young daughters go way higher than I on those rock walls. I prefer terra firma.
January 9th, 2007 at 11:58 amLOVE LOVE LOVE the rock gym. Any time baby. I am THERE.
January 9th, 2007 at 12:02 pmWe had a climbing wall what was contoured in college and it rocked (ha!). Then I moved outdoors to the great North Shore of Lake Superior and loved it. Sadly since I’ve moved back I have no one to climb with.
But it is a really great sport and quite a mental challenge to boot! Have fun!
January 9th, 2007 at 12:13 pmI was going to comment on the grooviness of that bag way back when and look, it’s back! So now I get my chance to say how much I love it! And I can’t wait to hear who sent it to you.
There’s awesome climbing in Colorado too, ya know!
January 9th, 2007 at 12:33 pmWow, that bag is amazing! Lucky you!!
January 9th, 2007 at 12:42 pmThat is a great random act of kindness! How wonderful that they didn’t even put their name to be recognized. You don’t see that very often anymore.
January 9th, 2007 at 1:42 pmHow cool was that…someone sent you a wonderful gift! And, I’d love to try that rock wall. The only thing I get to climb over is the pile of toys in the play room!
January 9th, 2007 at 2:11 pmi used to climb rock walls at a gym. then when i was turning 40, i decided it was time for the real things and signed myself up for 10 days in the desert with Outward Bound. It was absolutely amazing, and even though my favorite part was the 24 hour solo, climbing rocks came close. with no visible grips or places to put feet and hands…i’ll never look at a granite face the same way again, you learn to see crevices where you initially though none existed.
i am this way about many things: started spinning for the exercise, then decided to make it into training sessions for a 300-mile bike ride i decided to sign myself up for. rock walls equaled training for outward bound.
what are your goals? i’m all about picking big ones that seem impossible–nothing like the feeling of accomplishment you get when you do them.
all that said, there is something too in the zen nature of just being where you are with any activity–so kelli, be the wall and keep one eye on those harder grips, they’ll be easy soon enough…

January 9th, 2007 at 3:02 pmWhat a sweet gift for a sweet person! You deserve it Miss Kelli! I think it’s so awesome that the person was anonymous……my grandma touted Pay it Forward before it was cool!
January 9th, 2007 at 7:12 pmAnd AMAZING rock climbing. *Sigh* I only wish to be so fit.
I have been telling everyone that this year was going to be great! You know, lucky seven! So glad you have reaped in some of the luck already! Enjoy.
January 9th, 2007 at 7:41 pmThat’s pretty cool on both counts…
Belay on!
January 9th, 2007 at 7:54 pmWahooo to you for both things! I used to go rock climbing often at an indoor gym here (sadly it closed down). Luckily there are still plenty of real rocks to climb!
What a lucky girl you are to be the proud owner of the birdie bag.
January 9th, 2007 at 8:31 pmYou do not look sausaged at all! The sport looks fantastic
January 10th, 2007 at 12:54 amwow, go Kelli! I admire you. And what a lovely act of random kindness! If anyone deserved it, it was you…

January 10th, 2007 at 6:30 amOh WoW! wow wow wow wow wow wow wow….
Whoever did this is a jewel - I think I am happier that you got this bag than if I had gotten it myself! So glad the charming birdie bag has found its way to just a good home, and I am so glad that I live in a world where people can surprise you with thoughtfulness in this manner…
Mystery Gift Giver - you just ROCK!

January 10th, 2007 at 10:49 amso cool! i hope you get into climbing. i did it a few times, years ago, and it was one of the most personally challenging and rewarding experiences ever; still ranks real high!!
January 10th, 2007 at 1:05 pm“The Boy” went to a birthday party at Rocks & Ropes, and it looked like great fun. I happened to be wearing a short jean skirt so I didn’t try, but I’ve been wanting to go back and CONQUER that wall!
January 10th, 2007 at 3:30 pmSomebody sure was thoughtful with that gift. And anonymous too - how fun!
January 16th, 2007 at 11:56 amThe rock climbing looks cool. I’ve never done it but my kids have and they think it’s a blast.
J’adore le sac. J’aime les sacs de Timbuk2. Je suis tres jalouse.
January 20th, 2007 at 3:41 am[...] P.S. I’m sporting my Chacos and birdie messenger bag today and trying yet again to make sense of the public transportation available to East Valley residents who work downtown. Carpooled in, bussing/walking home. I’ve got my camera ready for another fun urban adventure. [...]
