I’m a big, fat, caffeinated cheater
Yep. I just had $2 worth of coffee and oh my, was it worth every single drop. I actually thought of licking the cup before throwing it away, I was so sad to be finished with it.
One of many lessons learned during this budget week — $.25 worth of coffee is sold for $2 at most coffee shops. You can make it stretch into two cups with skim milk and Splenda.
Now to figure out how to cut that $2 from my planned food. Or, I very well may just make the caveat that my world without caffeine is an ugly, terrible place. My name is Kelli and I’m a caffeine-aholic. For what it is worth, I am considerably nicer with coffee in my system.

Dude, I would sell myself for a coffee fix. It’s a sickness.
November 28th, 2006 at 12:43 pmheh- I’m the same. I wouldn’t mind living on lentils as long as i had my black plunger coffee every morning.
November 28th, 2006 at 1:48 pmFascinating posts about living on food stamps. It’s amazing how easy it is to forget about how lucky we are.
Two years ago this month I used to spend an average of $4.50 PER DAY on a pack of cigarettes & a large cup of 1/2 coffee, 1/2 cappuccino. I knew all the cashiers at my gas station & they always knew what I wanted before asking for it. Since then I have kicked the nasty expensive smoking habit & I brew my own coffee in the mornings. I make 3 cups of Folger’s French Vanilla roast coffee in my mini pot with a packet of Sweet ‘n Low & I’m good to go. It’s tastier, not nearly as fattening, and much less expensive! I love all your points in your previous post, too. Our country seriously needs to get it’s priorities right with nutrition for everyone.
November 28th, 2006 at 1:59 pmI’m currently weaning myself off caffeine (although my drug of choice is Diet Coke. What can I say, I’m from Atlanta!) and so I feel your pain.
I also thought of you today, when I stopped by the grocery store to pick up “just a few things” for dinner tonight, and lunch tomorrow - and spent close to $30! I realized that was more than your budget for the week. It really gave me pause….
November 28th, 2006 at 2:14 pmCoffee + Kelli = a very happy girl…good for you! I hope you enjoyed it
November 28th, 2006 at 3:42 pmKelli, I just read back through your last few posts and I have to say I am really impressed at this whole experiment, you deserve a coffee dear!! Good for you!
November 28th, 2006 at 5:24 pmI love my morning coffee. I don’t know that I could go without it.
November 29th, 2006 at 6:06 amIf it’s any consolation, you rate higher on the living-a-moral/green-life meter if you truly appreciated your dietary/budgetary transgression (and it sounds like you did). It would be much worse if you blew the budget and didn’t even appreciate it.
November 29th, 2006 at 6:19 amI’m italian, I can’t live without my daily dose of coffee, so I can understand you perfectly!!
November 29th, 2006 at 7:44 amJust make sure you’re drinking fair-trade coffee and I’d say you’re good to go!
November 29th, 2006 at 8:39 amIf we could just have coffee transferred directly into our body and need nothing else, life would be good! Your post made me laugh! I did a 40 day partial fast/cleansing diet and about died from lack of coffee….I had to cheat and drink a small cup every day and cheated a few times with Coke. I’m not just addicted to coke, I stinkin’ LOVE it. It’s horrible!
BUT when I did drink less. I did feel better…..
Hang in there!
November 29th, 2006 at 8:56 amoh I understand the caffine love. I have been starting to ween myself from the stuff to make a much better new years resolution this next year of no caffine. I am down to two DC’s a day, and right now all I can think about is that second one I can still have. It has taken everything out of me to not run to the machine and buy one. But I must hold out!
Don’t worry - the coffee isn’t the point of your week. The point is to undertand other people’s limitations. Sounds like you already get it.
November 29th, 2006 at 11:41 amI think it would be so hard to live without caffeine. If you’re desperate to stretch out that coffee and can stand the taste, do what I did in college when I was flat broke: don’t empty out the last brew’s grounds and just add a little bit of new coffee grounds to the pot before re-brewing. It ain’t pretty, but it’ll get you by in a pinch.
