Who Wants a Bake-Off?
I read this in the morning paper:
“The Bundt cake, the one with the hole in it, is an American icon. And simple to create: remove from the oven, invert on a plate, dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with glaze and serve. If you’ve got magic in the batter and can bake a cake that’s representative of Arizona (or your state), enter the ‘Bundts Across America’ national bake-off contest.
To celebrate its 60th anniversary, Nordic Ware, creator of the Bundt pan, is hosting the contest for home bakers. Entries will be judges on originality, taste, texture, how closely the recipe reflects the baker’s home state and visual appearance.
Budnt pants are available in different fluted shapes, such as cathedral,a rose, a star, a sunflower and for the holidays, a wreath.
One winner will be chosen from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. From the first-round winners, 10 will be chosen as finalists for the national award. The prize? A party for 50 hosted by Nordic Ware, with Bundt cakes for the dessert and $1,000 in Nordic Ware products.
Enter recipes and an essay on why your cake best represents Arizona between May 1 to Sept. 1. Entry forms and guidelines can be viewed at www.nordicware.com.”
Bring it. I can bake off like the best of the domestic queens. Now, the real question is, what bundt cake best represents Arizona?
I’ll take all the advice you’re willing to give. And then of course share some recipes of my own. What would you bake for your state? Give me your most creative suggestions and one will be randomly selected for a fabuloso culinary prize. Entries close April 25th at 4 pm Arizona time.
To the kitchen!

I’m thinking Cowboy Hat.
April 18th, 2006 at 3:16 pmI think you could make the ridges of the budnt cake look like the Grand Canyon.
April 18th, 2006 at 3:25 pmMaybe do something with a star, like our flag?
April 18th, 2006 at 4:10 pmI just bought two sets of small bundt pans.. haven’t used them yet but I’m looking forward to it.. I made one once that had a truffle center..but I need to work on that some more because I didn’t like the way it turned out..Those look YUMMY btw!
April 18th, 2006 at 4:39 pmI’m going in a different direction. Prickly Pear cake. They can make margaritas and jelly out of it, why not cake. And then you can decorate with candy needles and a small javalina. Made of chocolate.
April 18th, 2006 at 6:53 pmthe bundt cake is already pretty perfect for my state… utah! the beehive state! of course we could also make something that resembles a ski resort with powdered sugar snow.
April 18th, 2006 at 7:16 pmbundt jalapeno cornbread. seriously.
I stop by your site every day. The depth and breadth of things you are regularly involved in boggles my mind.

April 19th, 2006 at 5:57 amChipotle chocolate cake with prickly pear glaze. My best friend made a cake like that for culinary school and it was incredible. You could do a round-ish cake and make it look like a sun, somehow. If I still lived in Tucson (where my parents are) and made bundt cakes that’s what I would do. If the contest were where I am now I could make anything and win because the French? Don’t really have bundt cakes.
April 19th, 2006 at 6:38 amGreat bundt ideas! I have nothing to contribute. But I will complain that I SO DID NOT have to know about the nordicware site [the link is wrong, by the way]. I love Nordicware -they are the best cake pans. Now I must purchase a new bundt pan in a different shape! I’m thinking one of the tunnel pans…
April 19th, 2006 at 8:23 amI love the idea of a jalepeno cornbread — genius! Maybe you could use the cathedral pan to make the Grand Canyon ridges? I mean, it is the Grand Canyon State and all. I bet that wreath pan would allow you to build a mighty cactus, too. Hmmm…so many ideas!
April 19th, 2006 at 9:37 am[…] Many of you commented on what I should do to make a bundt cake representative of Arizona for that contest I’m entering. Thank you! After reading the NordicWare web site, I see one of the requirements for entry is — of course — baking in their pans. I have no idea if my pans are the same, but I guess I have to go shopping this weekend. Darn it! I mean, I just hate to shop, especially for new baking gadgets… […]
